Uterine fibroids are very common, but many women are unaware of their presence in the uterus until trying to conceive. Uterine fibroids are muscle tumors that can interfere with pregnancy when they lie within the cavity of the uterus and grow over time. Large fibroids can lead to pelvic pain, low back pain, increased abdominal size, irregular bleeding, increased menstrual discomfort and infertility.
Fibroids are thought to compress the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) or interfere with the blood supply to the endometrium, thus impacting fertility. Some fibroids are in locations that may cause blockage of the cervix or fallopian tubes.
In the absence of infertility or other problems, fibroids can usually be left alone.
