About Semen Collection/Cryopreservation

Scheduling Information

A two- to three-day abstinence period (but no more than five days) is required prior to collecting a semen specimen for analysis. Please keep this in mind when scheduling your appointment. Semen analysis is done at the discretion of the Assistive Reproductive Technology (ART) facility. Our staff will guide you through the process of scheduling.

Your partner is welcome to assist you with the semen collection process.

If the specimen is produced outside North Dalls IVF, it should be received no later than one hour after collection. The specimen must be transported as close to body temperature as possible (i.e. in your pocket, held in your hands, between your legs). This is especially important during the winter months. Please make prior arrangements with our laboratory to drop off the specimen in order to ensure timely receipt of the sample. You must use a sterile container provided by our office for semen collection.

Instructions for Collection

  1. Before collecting specimen, please wash hands and penis thoroughly and rinse well to remove any soap residue.
  2. A masturbated sample, without the use of lubricants, is required. Collect the sample directly into the sterile container provided.
  3. Place the lid securely on the container and keep the container upright.
  • If any portion of the sample spills, please inform our personnel as this may result in an inaccurate reading.
  • After collection, please bring the container to our medical assistant, who will verify your identity and assist you with an identification label for your container.
